"Petina" is just prior to a hole forming in the body? I don't think so. To me, surface rust is not petina, it's a cry for help at a point in which a car can be saved from the ravages of rust. IMHO, once it's gotten to surface rust, it needs more than just superficial preservation to really ensure the car's longevity. Surface rust, on the other hand, is just surface rust. If your car is on the side of faded paint, you can help preserve it by keeping it waxed.
